Why visit
Ajaccio is a Corsica base for harbor walks, markets, beaches, Napoleon history, and routes toward the Gulf of Porto. It works when the island trip needs a real town before the wilder coast.
When to avoid
August is jammed with French and Italian visitors and ferry/hotel prices double. November through March many restaurants and tour operators shut down entirely. Include the last ferry, schedules thin in shoulder season. For Ajaccio, avoid widening the route after the day is underway. When plans change in Ajaccio, choose something close rather than spending the day in transit.
