Why visit
Ankara rewards a focused two days for Anıtkabir (Atatürk's Mausoleum, free and striking), the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations (one of the world's great archaeological collections), and the Ankara Citadel’s Roman/Byzantine walls. Visit April to May or September to October when the high steppe is mild. Use as a hub for Cappadocia and the Hittite capital Hattusa.
When to avoid
January and February bring biting cold (-5°C nights, snow). July and August can hit 32°C with relentless sun on the treeless plateau. Air pollution from coal heating and traffic can be poor in winter. Check AQI if sensitive. Use Ankara with a little spare time rather than a rigid chain of bookings. Use Ankara with room for Sunday closures, holidays, queues, traffic, and cross-town movement.
