Why visit
Anzio is the easiest beach escape from Rome by direct train (under an hour) plus a serious WWII pilgrimage stop, the Anzio Beachhead Museum, American and Commonwealth war cemeteries, and Nettuno just east. Best months are May, June, and September for swimming without the August Roman crush. Hydrofoil to Ponza island leaves the harbor.
When to avoid
August packs in escaping Romans. Expect impossible parking and tripled hotel prices. November through February is grey, wet, and quiet, many beach restaurants close. The town's WWII bombardment damage means the centro storico is patchy. In Anzio, do the practical checks before the day is fixed: opening days, tickets, transport frequency, and distances between areas. Do not let the map of Anzio make the route look simpler than it is.
