Arequipa is Peru through white volcanic stone, monastery courtyards, food, mountain views, and Colca Canyon routes. It works when the trip needs altitude and city life before deeper Andes travel.
When to avoid
January through March is the wet season, trails to Colca turn muddy and views cloud over. Altitude (2,335 m) hits some travellers hard. Plan an easy first day. Petty theft happens in the city center. Watch belongings. Once you start in Arequipa, keep the next stops close enough to preserve the day. In Arequipa, a local replacement usually keeps the route clearer than a cross-town detour.
