Ashgabat is a strange and useful Turkmenistan base for white-marble avenues, museums, markets, desert edges, and Nisa nearby. It works when the trip wants Central Asia in a highly planned capital form.

Do not visit Ashgabat expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. Do the practical reading of Ashgabat first: hours, routes, weather, crowds, and how far the neighborhoods really sit from one another. A safer and clearer day in Ashgabat usually comes from grouping nearby sites and avoiding unnecessary late or awkward transfers. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Ashgabat as a base rather than the whole destination.
