Why visit
Assisi has Italy's most affecting pilgrimage city plus a tiny gem of medieval art, the Giotto frescoes alone are memorable. Visit April through June or September to October when the pink stone glows in low light. The Calendimaggio spring festival (early May) fills the streets with medieval pageantry. The October 4 Feast of San Francesco is the spiritual peak.
When to avoid
Do not visit Assisi expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. In Assisi, a good plan starts with the constraints, not with the number of sights. A safer and clearer day in Assisi usually comes from grouping nearby sites and avoiding unnecessary late or awkward transfers. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Assisi as a base rather than the whole destination.
