Why visit
Astana is one of the most ambitious 21st-century capital cities anywhere, a working surrealist showcase of post-Soviet ambition. Visit May, June, or September when the steppe is mild. Use as a launchpad for Burabay National Park ("Kazakh Switzerland") 250 km north and as a transit point on rail journeys to Almaty or Russia.
When to avoid
Winters (December to February) are brutal, routinely -25°C with biting steppe wind. One of the coldest capital cities on earth. Summer mosquitoes off the Ishim are aggressive. The vast empty boulevards mean walking distances are huge. Budget for taxis. In Astana, do the practical checks before the day is fixed: opening days, tickets, transport frequency, and distances between areas. For Astana, the map may look tighter than the day feels.
