Why visit
The Palais des Papes alone justifies the trip, its vast Great Audience hall and frescoed papal chambers are striking. Visit May, June, or September. Avignon's huge July theater festival (Festival d'Avignon, since 1947) draws international performers but packs the city. Use as a base for the Pont du Gard, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and the Luberon villages.
When to avoid
July festival weeks see hotel prices triple and triple-lined queues at the palace. The Mistral wind can blow for days. August heat hits 35°C+ on the south-facing palace square. Many bistros close Sundays. Use Avignon with practical movement built into the plan from the start. In Avignon, a good plan groups nearby stops, leaves slack for transport, and allows for small museums, churches, or galleries to close without much notice.
