Why visit
Barletta combines genuine medieval atmosphere, the Castello, Romanesque cathedral, and the Colossus, with easy reach of UNESCO Castel del Monte and the trulli of Alberobello an hour south. Best months are May, June, and September, swimmable Adriatic, manageable heat, and the Disfida festival in mid-September is a spectacle.
When to avoid
Do not visit Barletta expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. A route through Barletta works best when opening days, transport, weather, and distance are treated as cultural logistics, not afterthoughts. A safer and clearer day in Barletta usually comes from grouping nearby sites and avoiding unnecessary late or awkward transfers. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Barletta as a base rather than the whole destination.
