Why visit
Bautzen is a Saxony stop with towers, Sorbian culture, old streets, mustard, and reach toward Muskauer Park. It works when eastern Germany needs smaller-city texture.
When to avoid
Skip January to February if you want to walk the wall circuit comfortably, cold and gray though the Christmas market in early December is lovely. The town is small, a single overnight is plenty. Expect limited Sunday shopping and hours. Use Bautzen with the basics confirmed first: opening days, tickets, transport, and realistic distances. A short distance in Bautzen can still take time once hours, queues, and transport are included.
