Bayonne is a Basque-country city for river streets, chocolate, ham, markets, festivals, and easy movement toward Biarritz or the Pyrenees. It works when the coast needs a food-and-town base.
When to avoid
Skip the August Fêtes week unless you came specifically for it, a million people in white and red, accommodation at triple price, and the small old town heaving. Skip November to February for sustained gray rain, though the Christmas market is compact. Cars in the center are heavily restricted. Use the riverside parking and walk.
