Why visit
Visit Bergen for Bryggen, maritime history, music, wood-built streets, mountain viewpoints, and the gateway it gives to western Norway. The Hanseatic Museum context, KODE museums, Grieg's Troldhaugen, the fish market, Fløibanen, and ferry or fjord routes make the city more than a staging point. For a short stay, pair the harbor and Bryggen with one museum and one viewpoint. With longer time, add Troldhaugen, a fjord day, or slower walks in neighborhoods that show how the city lives with steep ground and frequent rain.
When to avoid
Bergen is wet, expensive, and often busier than its size suggests. Rain can interrupt viewpoints and fjord plans, and cruise traffic can crowd the harbor area. Keep waterproof clothing close and do not let one weather-dependent view carry the whole day. If you want guaranteed sun or a low-cost city break, Bergen is a risky choice. It works best when rain, ferries, museums, cafes, and flexible plans are part of the appeal.
