Why visit
Besancon is a Doubs river city with Vauban fortifications, museums, old streets, and access toward Jura saltworks country. It works when eastern France needs history and landscape in the same stop.
When to avoid
Skip November to February for sustained gray, damp Burgundian-Jura cold and a city that hibernates between Christmas and the spring student return. The Citadel (the city's main draw) is exposed and miserable in winter rain. Most museums close Tuesdays. Use Besançon with opening days and distances confirmed before the plan hardens. A day in Besançon is easier when one backup sits close to the main route.
