Why visit
Bolzano is the Italian Alps through porticoes, Tyrolean food, mountain museums, cable cars, and Dolomites access. It is useful because the city makes the German-Italian overlap easy to feel.
When to avoid
Skip Bolzano in July and August if extreme heat is a concern. Its position in a narrow Adige valley basin traps heat more than typical for an Alpine city, with July highs averaging near 30°C and a record 40°C day set in June 2019. The city logged its hottest night on record, a low of 25.4°C, on June 27, 2026, part of a run of increasingly severe summer heat spikes in the valley.
