Callao has been undergoing a dramatic creative regeneration in the historic Centro neighbourhood, muralists have transformed once-derelict streets into the open-air Monumental Callao art project. Visit the Real Felipe Fortress, the Casa-Hacienda Aliaga, and a ferry to Isla San Lorenzo. May through October is the cool dry season. September brings the famous La Punta neighbourhood's procession of Saint Peter (patron of fishermen).
Outside the regenerated Monumental zone and La Punta peninsula, much of Callao remains rough, stick to taxis between neighborhoods, especially after dark, and don't display valuables. Pacific currents are cold (around 16°C even in summer) and swimming is unpleasant. The city's air can be hazy with the Lima coastal garúa fog from May through October.
