Why visit
May through October is high season but May Film Festival, late June to early July (post-festival, pre-summer crowds), and September are the sweet spots. Walk the Croisette and the Vieux Port, climb to Le Suquet (the old town) for sunset views over the bay, take a boat to Île Sainte-Marguerite (where the Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned), and dine on bouillabaisse in a Vieux Port bistro. The Marche Forville is one of the Riviera's best food markets.
When to avoid
Do not visit Cannes expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. For Cannes, the practical constraints are part of the itinerary: hours, transport, weather, crowds, and the distance between worthwhile areas. A safer and clearer day in Cannes usually comes from grouping nearby sites and avoiding unnecessary late or awkward transfers. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Cannes as a base rather than the whole destination.
