Why visit
November through February is the cool dry season, ideal for exploring Vat Phou's sandstone galleries and the surrounding 4000 Islands (Si Phan Don) river archipelago to the south. Sunset on the Mekong from a bungalow on Don Det or Don Khon, freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins (critically endangered), and Khone Phapheng waterfall (Southeast Asia's largest by volume) are nearby highlights. The Vat Phou festival (full moon of the third lunar month, usually February) is the year's headline event.
When to avoid
Wet season (June to October) brings heavy rain and humidity. Vat Phou trails become slick. Tourist infrastructure is basic. UXO (unexploded ordnance) from the Vietnam War remains in some rural areas, stay on marked trails. Malaria prophylaxis recommended. In Champasak, set the route only after checking opening days and distances. A day in Champasak is easier when one backup sits close to the main route.
