Why visit
Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) are best. The Hunan Museum is one of China's finest. Yuelu Mountain park and the millennium-old Yuelu Academy give a taste of Hunan literary tradition. Orange Isle (Juzizhou) on the Xiang River with its giant sculpture of young Mao anchors riverside walks. Spicy Hunan cuisine, stinky tofu, smoked pork with chili, is a draw in itself.
When to avoid
Do not visit Changsha expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. For Changsha, the practical constraints are part of the itinerary: hours, transport, weather, crowds, and the distance between worthwhile areas. Keep Changsha practical: fewer cross-town moves, confirmed hours, and paid transport when it saves time or saves time. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Changsha as a base rather than the whole destination.
