Why visit
May, June, September, and October are ideal, warm but not crushing, the Cretan beaches are quiet, and the mountain villages of the Lefka Ori are walkable. Walk the harbour at sunset to the lighthouse, eat dakos (Cretan barley rusk salad) at a Splantzia tavern, and day-trip to the spectacular Samaria Gorge (a 16km descent through limestone walls) and the pink sands of Elafonisi beach.
When to avoid
Do not visit Chania expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. A route through Chania works best when opening days, transport, weather, and distance are treated as cultural logistics, not afterthoughts. A safer and clearer day in Chania usually comes from grouping nearby sites and avoiding unnecessary late or awkward transfers. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Chania as a base rather than the whole destination.
