Why visit
Chimbote is a Peru coast route stop, useful for port context, seafood, north-south road movement, and access toward Chankillo. It should read as practical and specific rather than polished.
When to avoid
Chimbote's air can carry the distinctive smell of fishmeal processing, especially during peak fishing seasons, which can be rough for sensitive noses. Petty crime is real, so use taxis at night. Pacific currents are cold, around 17°C even in summer, and swimming is unpleasant. The 1970 Ancash earthquake destroyed much of the historic city, so the center is mostly post-1970 rebuilding.
