Why visit

November through February is the cool dry season, the only sensible window. Highlights include the Ethnological Museum, the Old Portuguese cemetery, the World War II Commonwealth War Cemetery, and Foy's Lake (a former British colonial reservoir, now an amusement park). Chittagong is mainly a base for the Chittagong Hill Tracts (Bandarban, Rangamati, the Buddhist tribal heartland of Bangladesh), Cox's Bazar (the world's longest natural sand beach, 120 km), and the world's largest ship-breaking yards just north of the city.

When to avoid

Pre-monsoon and monsoon (March to October) brings extreme heat, then biblical rainfall and frequent cyclones, Bangladesh is one of the world's most cyclone-prone countries. The Chittagong Hill Tracts require a special permit and have ongoing political sensitivity around indigenous rights. Visa rules for Bangladesh have tightened. Verify policy. Drink only bottled water. Food hygiene is variable.

About Chittagong

Chittagong, officially Chattogram, is the second-largest city in Bangladesh and the largest city in the Greater Chittagong region. Home to the Port of Chittagong, it is the busiest port in Bangladesh and the Bay of Bengal. The city is also the business capital of Bangladesh. It is the administrative seat of an eponymous division and district. The city is located on the banks of the Karnaphuli River between the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the Bay of Bengal. In 2022, the Chittagong District had a population of approximately 9.2 million according to a census conducted by the government of Bangladesh. In 2022, the city area had a population of more than 5.6 million. The city is an important export hub, with goods such as tea, jute, and petroleum products being shipped through its port. The city is home to many large local businesses and plays an important role in the Bangladeshi economy.
