Why visit
Visit Cidade Velha for the oldest visible layer of Cabo Verde’s colonial history. It is the place on Santiago where fort, street, church, and harbor history can be read in one compact stop. It pairs well with Praia and Tarrafal because it gives the island route a historical center instead of only beaches and drives.
When to avoid
Do not visit Cidade Velha expecting a large museum city. The scale is small and exposed. Heat, sun, and transport timing matter. Go with water, shade in mind, and enough context to understand why the site matters.
