Why visit
May through September is the dry season and best for travel. Visit the four kratons (especially Kasepuhan, the oldest), the Trusmi batik village to see the cloud-pattern textiles being made, the Goa Sunyaragi cave/garden complex, and Sunan Gunungjati's revered tomb. Cirebon's 'tahu gejrot' (tofu in spicy palm-sugar sauce) and 'empal gentong' (spicy beef soup) are unique local dishes. The new Whoosh high-speed rail to/from Jakarta cuts the journey to under three hours.
When to avoid
Wet season (October to April) brings flooding to low-lying neighborhoods. Java traffic can be exhausting. Budget extra time. Conservative dress (cover shoulders and knees) is appropriate at the kratons and tombs. Don't photograph people without permission, especially during prayers. Use Cirebon with opening days and distances confirmed before the plan hardens. In Cirebon, keep one nearby alternative because closures, holidays, traffic, and limited transit can change the day.
