Why visit
Clermont-Ferrand is an Auvergne base for black-lava streets, food, Michelin history, and the Chaine des Puys volcanic landscape nearby. It works when central France should feel geologic, not only pastoral.
When to avoid
Clermont can feel sleepy compared to Lyon (less than 2 hours east). The city center empties on Sundays. The black-stone architecture is unique but striking visitors as gloomy in overcast weather. The Auvergne is mountainous. Rural roads can be slow. Use Clermont-Ferrand with practical movement built into the plan from the start. In Clermont-Ferrand, a good plan groups nearby stops, leaves slack for transport, and allows for small museums, churches, or galleries to close without much notice.
