Why visit
May through September is best. Climb the Veste for sweeping Franconian views, walk the Renaissance market square with its Bratwurst tradition (the Coburg sausage is grilled over pinecones for a distinctive flavour), and visit the lavish Schloss Ehrenburg ducal residence. Coburg's Samba Festival in July (Germany's largest, due to a curious sister-city link with Brazil) draws hundreds of thousands.
When to avoid
Coburg's smaller scale means most things close earlier than Munich or Nuremberg. Some far-right political activity has surfaced in town in recent years, visitors usually won't notice but stay alert. Use Coburg with opening days and distances confirmed before the plan hardens. For Coburg, a nearby substitute is useful when closures, holidays, traffic, or transit interfere.
