Why visit
November through February is the cool dry season, the only sensible window. Visit the Dantokpa Market (one of West Africa's largest, sprawling and intense), take a pirogue to Ganvié stilt village, and explore the Foundation Zinsou contemporary African art museum. Cotonou serves as the natural hub for Benin's strong Vodou heritage, day trips reach Ouidah (the major historical slave-trading port and center of Vodou pilgrimage) and Abomey (former capital of the Dahomey kingdom, with UNESCO-listed royal palaces).
When to avoid
Do not visit Cotonou expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. The map of Cotonou is only half the problem. Hours, heat, rain, crowds, and transport decide what is realistic. In Cotonou, keep the plan compact, check hours before arrival, and use taxis or rideshares when public transport is inconvenient or safety varies by area. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Cotonou as a base rather than the whole destination.
