Why visit
April through October is the dry, cooler season (remember Brazil's southern hemisphere). The Botanical Garden's well known glass-and-steel greenhouse, the Oscar Niemeyer Museum (with its eye-shaped main building), the Wire Opera House, and the trio of immigration-themed parks (Tangú Park's Polish forest, the Ukrainian Memorial, the Italian Forest, and the Japanese Square) define a uniquely planned city. Day trips reach the Serra Verde Express train through the Atlantic Forest down to Morretes and Paranaguá.
When to avoid
Curitiba's winters can be unexpectedly cold for South America, high-altitude lows occasionally drop below freezing in July. Rain is frequent year-round but particularly heavy October to March. Crime levels are lower than Rio or São Paulo but exercise normal urban awareness. A route through Curitiba needs enough margin for hours and delays to change. Use Curitiba with room for Sunday closures, holidays, queues, traffic, and cross-town movement.
