Why visit

April through May (cherry blossoms along the Sincheon river) and October through November (autumn foliage on Palgong-san) are the best windows. The Yangnyeongsi medicine market and museum, Seomun Night Market, the eighth-century Donghwasa Temple at the foot of Palgong-san, and the Daegu KTX hub make it an easy stop on a Seoul to Busan trip. The Chimac (chicken + mac for makgeolli/maekju) culture is taken seriously here.

When to avoid

July to August is very hot and humid, Daegu regularly tops 35°C and is mockingly called Daefrica by other Koreans. Air pollution from yellow dust (hwangsa) blowing in from China can be heavy in spring. The downtown can feel sleepy compared to Seoul or Busan. The energy is in markets and side streets rather than headline landmarks.

About Daegu

Daegu, formerly spelled Taegu and officially Daegu Metropolitan City (대구광역시), is a city in southeastern South Korea. It is the third-largest urban agglomeration in South Korea after Seoul and Busan; the fourth-largest metropolitan city in the nation with over 2.3 million residents; and the second-largest city after Busan in the Yeongnam region in southeastern South Korea. Daegu and the surrounding North Gyeongsang Province are often referred to as Daegu-Gyeongbuk, with a total population of over 5 million.
