Why visit
Dakar is Senegal at city scale: music, food, markets, Atlantic edges, galleries, and the ferry to Goree. It works when West Africa should feel urban, coastal, and culturally current.
When to avoid
Do not visit Dakar expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. For Dakar, the practical constraints are part of the itinerary: hours, transport, weather, crowds, and the distance between worthwhile areas. Keep Dakar practical: fewer cross-town moves, confirmed hours, and paid transport when it saves time or saves time. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Dakar as a base rather than the whole destination.
