Why visit
Djenne belongs in the atlas for Sahelian urban history and architecture. Mud-brick streets, mosque context, market history, and river-region geography make it one of West Africa’s essential heritage records. It should be kept as research material, not as casual planning copy.
When to avoid
Do not treat Djenne as a current travel recommendation. In July 2026, the U.S. State Department listed Mali at Level 4, Do Not Travel, citing crime, terrorism, unrest, health risks, and kidnapping. The heritage value is real, but the current travel-risk frame overrides it.
