Why visit
Late spring through early autumn (May to September) is best. Boat trips through the Biesbosch National Park (one of Europe's largest freshwater tidal wetlands. Just south of the city) are the obvious draw experience. And the working windmills of Kinderdijk are 25 minutes away by waterbus. The compact Dordrecht old town, a maze of canals and 16th to to 18th-century merchant houses, sees a fraction of Amsterdam's crowds.
When to avoid
Dordrecht is sometimes underrated as 'just' a Rotterdam suburb, it isn't, and deserves its own day. The Biesbosch is mosquito country in summer. Bring repellent. Many family-run restaurants close Sundays and Mondays. A route through Dordrecht should follow the practical checks, not precede them. A day in Dordrecht is easier when one backup sits close to the main route.
