Why visit
Douala is more often a stopover than a destination, but a reason to add day for the lively Marche des Fleurs, the New Bell market, the colonial Pagoda (a striking 1905 building once home to King Manga Bell), and the Musée Maritime. December through February is the drier and slightly less humid window. The city's nightlife and Makossa music scene are active year-round. Use Douala as a launchpad for the Mount Cameroon climb (Buea), Limbe's beaches, or the Bamileke highlands.
When to avoid
Petty crime, traffic congestion, and persistent humidity make Douala tiring. Avoid wearing visible jewellery and minimise night-time walking, especially around New Bell. Yellow fever vaccination is required. Malaria prophylaxis essential. The Anglophone crisis in Cameroon's southwest and northwest regions (Buea, Bamenda) means you should check current advisories before extending the trip beyond Francophone areas.
