Why visit
Visit Dubai for architecture, trade history, contemporary urban spectacle, food, beaches, and the contrast between the Creek and the high-rise city. Al Fahidi, Deira, the souks, Jameel Arts Centre, Alserkal Avenue, Dubai Opera, the Metro, and the waterfront districts give more context than malls alone. For a short stay, split the city between old Dubai and one modern district. With more time, add Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, desert edges, or art spaces instead of treating the city only as shopping and skyline.
When to avoid
Dubai is not ideal if you want a compact walking city, old urban fabric everywhere, or low-cost spontaneity. Distances are large, heat is serious, and many experiences are built around malls, taxis, reservations, and paid access. Summer can be punishing outdoors. If you dislike spectacle, luxury branding, or highly managed environments, focus on the Creek, food, art spaces, and regional day trips, or choose another Gulf base.
