May through September is best, with the Landschaftspark by night (the steelworks lit by James Turrell light installations) the obvious draw experience. The Inner Harbour (Innenhafen) has been redeveloped into a waterfront cultural quarter with the Lehmbruck Museum (key 20th-century sculpture). The MSV Duisburg football club, Tiger & Turtle walkable rollercoaster sculpture, and the Six Flags-style waterworks all offer a less-touristy side of the Ruhr.
Duisburg is rarely a destination on its own, it pairs naturally with Essen, Dortmund, or Düsseldorf. The 2010 Love Parade tragedy (21 deaths in a tunnel crush) cast a long shadow. The memorial site at the former Karstadt warehouse is sober. Some former-industrial neighborhoods feel run-down. Stick to the center and Innenhafen after dark.
