Why visit
May through August is the sweet spot, the Schlossfestspiele open-air theater festival runs through July and August in the palace courtyard, and the surrounding Black Forest is at its best for hiking and cycling. Walk the old town's Marktstrasse for half-timbered houses, climb to the medieval Lautenburg ruin, and follow the Albtal river path south into the woods.
When to avoid
Ettlingen is a half-day stop, not a multi-day destination, it pairs naturally with Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden, or a Black Forest base. Most shops close Sundays, including bakeries by midday.
