Why visit
Gaoua belongs in the atlas because Loropéni is a rare West African fortified heritage site, with stone walls, regional history, and a landscape context that is not interchangeable with the country’s capital. This is research-list material, not a near-term casual recommendation. It should stay tied to security review before any trip planning.
When to avoid
Do not treat Gaoua as a current go-now recommendation. In July 2026, the U.S. State Department listed Burkina Faso at Level 4, Do Not Travel, citing crime, kidnapping, terrorism, and health risks. Leave this as a future or research record unless the advisory environment changes and a serious local security plan exists.
