Why visit
Gaziantep is a food pilgrimage, over 400 documented local dishes, more pistachios per capita than anywhere on earth, and the original baklava that all other versions imitate. The Zeugma Mosaic Museum houses the world's largest Roman mosaic collection (the 'Gypsy Girl' fragment alone is a reason to add trip), and the bustling old bazaar around the citadel sells handmade copperware and yemeni leather slippers. Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are best.
When to avoid
The February 2023 earthquake caused major damage, check current conditions and reconstruction status before visiting. Some sites remain affected. Summer (July to August) hits 38°C with little shade. The Syrian border is close, don't venture south or east toward sensitive zones without local guidance. Female travelers should dress conservatively in this religiously traditional city.
