Why visit
Gjakova rewards travelers exploring Kosovo beyond Pristina and Prizren, the rebuilt Grand Bazaar with its 500+ wood-fronted shops is one of the most atmospheric markets in the Balkans, especially at dusk. Visit the Hadum Mosque (1592), the Krena clock tower, and the Ethnographic Museum. The surrounding Dukagjini plain and Albanian Alps offer extraordinary day trips into untouched mountain villages. Best in spring (May to June) and autumn (September to October).
When to avoid
Kosovo is recognized by most Western countries but not by Serbia, Russia, China, or several EU states, check whether your travel insurance covers Kosovo and whether visa requirements have changed. Don't drive a Serbian-plated car here. The bazaar largely closes Sunday. Summer afternoons are hot with little shade. Don't venture into mountain villages without a guide or solid maps.
