Why visit
Gjirokaster is an Albanian mountain city of stone houses, castle views, Ottoman streets, bunker history, and road-trip access through the south. It works when Albania should feel inland and architectural, not only coastal.
When to avoid
The cobblestones are a serious workout, wear sturdy shoes and don't try heels. Summer afternoons are hot (33°C+) with no shade on the open lanes. Explore early or late. Many smaller museums close Mondays. The Folk Festival held every five years draws crowds. Book accommodation a year ahead. Don't drive into the old town, park below.
