Why visit
Guadix is one of Spain's strangest and most underrated towns, wander the Barrio de las Cuevas where chimneys sprout from grass-covered hills, sleep in a cave-hotel (really cool in summer, warm in winter), and visit the spectacular pink-sandstone Cathedral built atop a former mosque. Combine with the badlands landscapes of the Marquesado, the Sierra Nevada national park (45 minutes south), and Granada (1 hour) for an memorable Andalusian loop. Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are ideal.
When to avoid
Do not visit Guadix expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. The map of Guadix is only half the problem. Hours, heat, rain, crowds, and transport decide what is realistic. In Guadix, it is better to build a tight route than to rely on long transfers between secondary stops. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Guadix as a base rather than the whole destination.
