Why visit
Guanajuato is a central Mexico city of mines, tunnels, plazas, steep lanes, music, and a historic center that feels built into the ravine. It works when the route wants color and depth without a beach nearby.
When to avoid
The hills are no joke, you'll climb constantly. Bring sturdy shoes and accept the cardio. Cervantino (mid-October) books out the city, reserve a year ahead. The mummies museum (Museo de las Momias) is a tourist trap with disturbing dignity issues. Skip if uncomfortable. Driving is really confusing thanks to the underground tunnels, take taxis or walk. Petty theft happens. Mind your pockets in crowds.
