Why visit
Guangzhou is China's food capital, dim sum here is a religion, not a brunch. Eat your way from morning yum cha through wonton noodles to the famous Cantonese roast goose. Visit the daily Qingping market for traditional Chinese medicine. Tour the Chen Family Ancestral Hall for southern Chinese decorative arts. Ride the lift up the spectacular Canton Tower at sunset. Use as launchpad for Foshan, the Pearl River Delta, and Hong Kong. Late autumn (October to November) is best.
When to avoid
Summer (June to September) is very hot, humid, and typhoon-prone, sustained 33°C+ with 85% humidity. Air quality varies. Check AQI before booking. The city is enormous and the metro complex. Learn the system before relying on it. Counterfeit goods at market areas. Visa rules for China are tightening. Check current requirements. Don't expect English signage outside major hotels and tourist sites, Cantonese-Mandarin signage dominates.
