Why visit
Visit Hakkâri for archaeology and older urban layers, landscape, water, gardens, and nearby routes. For Hakkâri, focus on what you can actually see and do: museums, streets, religious buildings, markets, performance spaces, food, and nearby landscapes. A good itinerary should stay selective. In Hakkâri, start with one strong anchor, then add a nearby walk, cafe, market, church, museum, bookshop, or evening event where the city supports it. That keeps the visit to Hakkâri legible and leaves time for ordinary streets to do their work. If Hakkâri has useful day trips or nearby landscape, use them to widen the context rather than to overload the schedule.
When to avoid
Most Western governments advise against travel to Hakkari Province due to ongoing security risks (PKK activity, military operations, occasional cross-border tensions with Iraq and Iran). Travel without a Turkish guide and proper permits is unwise. Photography of military installations is strictly forbidden. The roads from Van and Şırnak can close in winter or for security operations. Don't go without serious advance planning and current local advice.
