Why visit
Visit Hanga Roa because it is the practical base for Rapa Nui. The island’s archaeology, coast, volcanic landscape, and moai sites need a place to sleep, eat, book guides, and reset between site visits. The town matters because it makes the island legible. Use it as base camp, not as the whole attraction.
When to avoid
Do not visit Hanga Roa as a casual add-on to Santiago. Distance, cost, guide rules, weather, and limited flights make Rapa Nui a deliberate trip. If the national park is not the focus, the travel overhead is too high.
