Why visit
Hangzhou is built around West Lake, tea country, temples, causeways, gardens, and a softer city rhythm near Shanghai. It works when the trip needs classical Chinese landscape inside a modern city.
When to avoid
West Lake gets oppressively crowded on weekends and Chinese holidays. Visit on weekdays and early in the morning. Summer from July to August is very hot and humid, often above 35°C, while winter is damp and cold without good indoor heating in many older buildings. October's National Day Golden Week is the least practical period. Check current visa rules, museum hours, and transport plans before arrival.
