Why visit
The Peace Memorial Museum and the preserved A-Bomb Dome are essential, sobering history. Beyond that: the floating torii at Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima island, the rebuilt Hiroshima Castle, okonomiyaki cooked layer-by-layer in the Okonomimura building, and oysters fresh from the Inland Sea, the city's signature dish.
When to avoid
Do not visit Hiroshima expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. A route through Hiroshima works best when opening days, transport, weather, and distance are treated as cultural logistics, not afterthoughts. In Hiroshima, keep the plan compact, check hours before arrival, and use taxis or rideshares when public transport is inconvenient or safety varies by area. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Hiroshima as a base rather than the whole destination.
