Why visit
Of interest mainly to those tracking China's industrial-to-eco-park transitions, the Nanhu Wetland Park is a striking remediation of former coal-pit subsidence into a string of lakes and bird habitats. Add the Linhuan Ancient Town with its Han-dynasty earthworks and a famously deep-rooted Anhui-Northern noodle culture.
When to avoid
Do not visit Huaibei expecting every worthwhile stop to be close together or easy to improvise. The map of Huaibei is only half the problem. Hours, heat, rain, crowds, and transport decide what is realistic. In Huaibei, it is better to build a tight route than to rely on long transfers between secondary stops. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Huaibei as a base rather than the whole destination.
