The Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard Crossing of motorsport history; the Children's Museum (the world's largest); the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art; a downtown canal walk; the new acclaimed Bottleworks district; and the city's earned reputation as a great mid-sized convention destination with an excellent museum-to-bar density.
Indy 500 weekend triples hotel rates and gridlocks the city; book months ahead. Tornado season runs April to June with severe-weather watches part of life. Winters can include ice storms and lake-effect snow drifting down from Lake Michigan. Some inner-city neighborhoods east and far-west have notably higher crime; stick to the well-walked downtown and Mass Ave at night.
Summers are warm, humid and stormy; July highs around 28 to 30°C, sticky 18°C nights, and afternoon thunderstorms common. Severe-weather season runs roughly April through June, with tornado watches a regular part of life. Long evenings on Mass Ave, Indians baseball at Victory Field, and the canal-side beer gardens fill out the rhythm.
Winters are cold and grey with reliable snow and the occasional bone-rattling polar-vortex outbreak; January highs around 1°C, lows near -7°C, and ice storms that snarl the freeways. Indoor heating in modern buildings is good. The city's strong indoor museum line-up makes it a solid winter weekend destination. Pack layers and waterproof boots.
