Why visit
The Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard Crossing of motorsport history. The Children's Museum (the world's largest). The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art. A downtown canal walk. The new acclaimed Bottleworks district. And the city's earned reputation as a great mid-sized convention destination with an excellent museum-to-bar density.
When to avoid
Indy 500 weekend triples hotel rates and gridlocks the city. Book months ahead. Tornado season runs April to June with severe-weather watches part of life. Winters can include ice storms and lake-effect snow drifting down from Lake Michigan. Some inner-city neighborhoods east and far-west have notably higher crime. Stick to the well-walked downtown and Mass Ave at night.
