Why visit
Iquique is a northern Chile coast base with beaches, desert edges, nitrate history, port streets, and routes toward Humberstone and Santa Laura. It works when the Atacama story should include the Pacific.
When to avoid
The city has had earthquake and tsunami history (2014 magnitude 8.2). Know your evacuation routes from beach hotels. Petty crime in the center and at busy beaches is opportunistic. The harsh sun and reflected glare from desert and ocean make sunscreen essential year-round. Northern Chile narcotic-trafficking routes can complicate inland border travel.
