Isola verde, acque termali | Green island, thermal waters
The Castello Aragonese is one of Italy's most romantic ruins. The thermal gardens of Negombo and Poseidon offer terraced volcanic-spring pools with Tyrrhenian views. The wine-making villages of the inland hills produce excellent Biancolella. And the spectacular Maronti beach stretches under steaming fumaroles. Ferries from Naples take an hour.
Cruise-ship and ferry day-trippers crowd the port and Castello in summer. Arrive early or stay overnight. Roads are narrow and twisty, hire a scooter rather than a car. Some seismic activity (the 2017 Casamicciola quake killed two). Buildings have seen retrofitting. Mid-August (Ferragosto) is mobbed at triple prices. Don’t miss the last ferry back to Naples.
